Methylglyoxal (MGO)

Understanding MGO Strength

MGO stands for methylglyoxal, a naturally occurring compound found in Manuka honey. The MGO number indicates the minimum amount of methylglyoxal present in the honey, measured in milligrams per kilogram and verified through independent laboratory testing.

MGO is commonly used as an indicator of Manuka honey’s strength and quality. Generally, a higher MGO rating indicates a higher concentration of methylglyoxal and stronger naturally occurring antibacterial activity.

How MGO Develops

The nectar collected from Manuka flowers naturally contains DHA, or dihydroxyacetone. As the honey matures, DHA gradually converts into methylglyoxal.

Each batch of our Manuka honey is carefully stored and monitored to support this natural maturation process. It is independently laboratory tested before release to confirm its MGO rating, authenticity and quality.

What Does the “+” Mean?

The “+” represents the minimum guaranteed MGO level in the honey.

For example:

MGO 100+ means the honey contains at least 100 mg of methylglyoxal per kilogram.

The actual laboratory result may be higher than the number displayed on the label, but it will never be lower than the stated MGO rating.

Choosing an MGO Level

MGO 100+ is a great introduction to authentic Australian Manuka honey and is suitable for everyday enjoyment.

Higher MGO ratings offer a greater concentration of methylglyoxal and are often chosen by customers looking for a stronger-grade Manuka honey.
